I miss my forge

Wed Jun 1, 2011, 12:03 PM
I want my tools

I think the title says it all. The work I do in the air force is easy, but not as.... fullfilling as bashing red hot steel scrap into something useful. The only thing I've done creation wise is a custom paint job on my headset for work, but that comes nowhere close to what I'm used to. They do have an autoshop here, but I don't really have the time to do anything and I don't think they allow people to make "weapons". I miss having my own shop where I can do as I please without having to worry about people who can barely turn a wrench or swing a hammer peeking over my shoulder making comments about something they know nothing about. I don't know. I may just be venting. Maybe I'll find someone with a shop nearby who will let me use it on weekends when I have time.

I took a look at your stuff and I'll give you some advice right now. Buy some files and move away from using power tools for finishing. Also, try and get some good hardwood for your handles. It looks like you're using pine, which is not a good handle material. Hickory or oak is preferable. If you happen to know someplace that throws out old wooden pallets or crates, thats a good source. Oh, and buy a few books on knife making and read up on heat treating.
So,
Files
Better wood
Heat treating

Oh, and try to stay away from fantasy knife designs. They're junk IMO.

thanks for the add! If you want to chat about very portable forges- let me know! You can at least work on knives and such with them- even in a carport or patio. Easy, and not terribly expensive at all!
